Consumer alert: Most common vitamins, including children's vitamins, found to contain GMOs

A Natural News investigation reveals that an alarmingly large number of multivitamins and individual nutrient vitamins are formulated with ingredients derived from genetically modified corn.

This is the "dirty little secret" of the vitamin industry, but it's not one the mainstream media will touch because they refuse to admit GMOs are a problem to begin with. Those in the know, however, realize that eating any ingredients derived from GMOs may expose them to the BT insecticide chemicals found in GM corn.

GMOs are truly "hidden" in vitamins because the GM-derived ingredients are so heavily processed that all DNA is destroyed in the process, thereby destroying any footprint of genetic modification. Genetic ID tests, in other words, require particles of the food to remain relatively intact so that PCR lab equipment can replicate genetic sequences. Heavily processed ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin and ascorbic acid have no genetic material remaining, thereby sweeping their origins under the rug.

This is one reason who so many vitamins sold today are formulated with GMOs. This includes virtually ALL the popular multivitamin brands sold at grocery stores and pharmacies, by the way.



List of ingredients that are usually GMO

The Non-GMO Project Verified website lists these ingredients as commonly harboring GMOs:

Amino Acids
Aspartame
Ascorbic Acid
Sodium Ascorbate
Vitamin C
Citric Acid
Sodium Citrate
Flavorings ("natural" and "artificial")
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Lactic Acid

Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
Xanthan Gum
Vitamins
Yeast Products (such as yeast extract)



From this list, you can hopefully realize that:

• Nearly all "vegetarian" foods are GMO (loaded with yeast extract and soy).

• Nearly all sodas and soft drinks are GMO (HFCS, aspartame).

• Nearly all storable "emergency" food sold on the market today is GMO. (TVP, soy, MSG, yeast extract)

• Nearly all canned soups are GMO. (MSG, yeast extract)

• Nearly all children's meals and snacks are GMO. (HFCS, MSG, soy, corn)

In other words, just about everything the consuming masses are eating is contaminated with GMOs.

Here's a closer look at some of the more common GMO ingredients in vitamins and health products:

GMO ingredient #1 - Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a powdery, starch derivative of corn. It is used everywhere in the nutritional supplements industry, as a "filler" for fruit powders and drink mixes, as a "sweetener" for low-sugar health foods, and as a flow agent for vitamin capsules.

Unless it is certified as non-GMO, all maltodextrin should be assumed to come from GMO sources. The maltodextrin manufacturing supply chain isn't even geared up to provide non-GMO maltodextrin, as the large-scale factories that produce the material run so much GM corn that there would be significant cross-contamination even if they tried to pull off a non-GMO run.



The few companies that offer non-GMO starches and sweeteners are increasingly gaining attention across the industry. I'm aware of one company called Austrade, Inc. that offers a full line of non-GMO corn-based starches and sweeteners, including non-GMO maltodextrin.

According to the company, they were the first producer to receive "Non-GMO Project Verified" approval for non-GMO maltodextrin.

Non-GMO maltodextrin is also making its way into health products such as "Ultima Replenisher," a healthy replacement for those junk sports drinks made with GMO corn syrup, salt and low-grade minerals. Ultima Replenisher is completely GMO-free, relying on a non-GMO maltodextrin from certified sources.

A small company named Allergaroo.com also makes non-GMO microwaveable foods that are designed to be free of common allergens such as casein, soy, wheat, peanuts, dairy, GMOs, etc. (Although I have to wonder about the whole microwave concept...)

GMO ingredient #2 - Ascorbic acid

In the delusional world of western thinking on nutrients, ascorbic acid is called "vitamin C."

It isn't vitamin C, of course. Real vitamin C is a broad spectrum of synergistic compounds, never just an isolated, homogeneous molecule. But don't tell that to doctors, scientists or journalists, because they've all bought into the "ascorbic acid is vitamin C" delusion.

So nearly all the common "vitamin C" pills are nothing more than heavily refined ascorbic acid derived from GM corn. That's why those pills don't work, by the way. So when the mainstream media declares, "Vitamin C shows no benefit..." in clinical trials, what they are really saying is that heavily processed ascorbic acid isolated from genetically modified corn doesn't improve your health, and that's no surprise.

Look on the labels of your cheap, low-grade vitamins and multivitamins... you'll see "ascorbic acid" listed there, meaning you are eating GMOs. Throw those away. They're crap.



If you want real vitamin C, your best bet is to eat camu camu, which is the planet's highest source of natural, full-spectrum, food-based vitamin C. (The full synergy of nutrients, not just isolated chemicals.)

(By the way, as a side note, the FDA came to our warehouse and took a large number of samples of our camu camu to run lab tests in their Arkansas lab headquarters. They were obviously looking for heavy metals and pesticide residues. The lab tests, as we knew they would, came back 100% clear. That's because we're one of the few companies to actually test all the raw materials we import. So now we have official confirmation that even the FDA agrees that our products are clean. In truth, our own stringent lab test requirements are MORE STRICT than the FDA!)

There are also some vitamin companies making non-GMO vitamin C formulations. Expect them to be expensive because all non-GMO vitamin C must be sourced outside the United States. There is currently no U.S.-based producer of non-GMO vitamin C. (It simply doesn't exist.)

GMO ingredient #3 - Sucrose (heavily used in children's vitamins)

Take a look at almost any children's vitamins and you'll find they're made with several GMO ingredients: aspartame, sucrose and often citric acid, too.

In fact, children's vitamins are by far the most toxic because they're usually formulated with a much higher concentration of toxic ingredients such as artificial sweeteners, artificial colors and GMO-derived materials.



Children should be eating superfoods or food concentrates, not toxic vitamin pills. Remember, too, that the low-grade vitamin pills are manufactured by companies largely owned by the pharmaceutical industry. They have every incentive to make sure their vitamins actually cause health problems rather than prevent disease. This boosts their long-term profits as sick children become Big Pharma customers for life.

Join the call for GMO labeling on vitamins and supplements

As companies like MegaFood blaze forward in achieving non-GMO certification, they are going to force everyone else in the industry to follow suit (or lose customers). That's because consumers don't want hidden GMOs in their health supplements, obviously.

People take vitamins based on the belief that vitamins won't poison them. Unfortunately, this is a false assumption given the dirty tricks played by the pharmaceutical industry in churning out harmful, synthetic vitamins loaded with toxic substances such as GMOs.

That's why I support the mandatory GMO labeling of vitamins and dietary supplements. It's also why my own brand of superfoods and dietary supplements -- Health Ranger Select -- is 100% non-GMO.

See, it's not just about labeling GMOs in foods. GMOs need to be labeled (or ultimately, banned) in everything we eat, and that includes vitamins and dietary supplements.

Most health-conscious consumers already know to avoid GMOs in foods, but they fail to avoid them when selecting vitamins and supplements. So they're taking in quantities of GMO-derived materials in their health supplements, and that defeats the whole purpose of being "health conscious" in the first place.

Until GMOs are labeled (or banned) on vitamins and supplements, you have to be vigilant in avoiding GMO-derived ingredients such as maltodextrin, sucrose, ascorbic acid, citric acid and others.

Unless the product is certified non-GMO or comes from a company that is diligently working on the certification process, there is a better than 99% chance that they contain GMOs.

And what happens when you eat GMOs? Just ask these lab rats, which were fed a combination of GM corn and glyphosate, the weed killer chemical often used on genetically modified crops:

Splenda and sucralose proven to contribute to development of diabetes

One of the world's most popular non-caloric sweeteners has recently been exposed as a complete fraud. A new study published in the journal Diabetes Care reveals that Splenda (sucralose), which is commonly marketed to diabetics as a safe, non-nutritive sweetener (NNS), actually elicits a diabetes-promoting effect in people who consume it.

Researchers from the Center for Human Nutrition at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, made this discovery after evaluating the metabolic effects of consuming Splenda on a small group of 17 human participants, all of whom were obese and who did not consume artificial sweeteners at the beginning of the study. Each participant was subjected to either Splenda or control water 10 minutes prior to undergoing a five-hour glucose tolerance test.

At the conclusion of the randomized crossover trial, the team observed that Splenda consumption prompted noticeable changes in terms of insulin production, circulating insulin levels, and bodily sensitivity to insulin. As relayed by GreenMedInfo.com, a single dose of Splenda was found to increase plasma glucose concentrations by 0.6 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). It also led to a 20 percent spike in insulin levels, a 22 percent increased peak insulin secretion rate, a 7 percent decrease in insulin clearance, and a 23 percent decrease in insulin sensitivity.

"Compared with the control condition, sucralose ingestion caused 1) a greater incremental increase in peak plasma glucose concentrations, 2) a ... greater incremental increase in insulin area under the curve (AUC), 3) a ... greater peak insulin secretion rate, 4) a ... decrease in insulin clearance, and 5) a ... decrease in SI (insulin sensitivity)," wrote the authors in their abstract. "These data demonstrate that sucralose affects the glycemic and insulin responses to an oral glucose load in obese people who do not normally consume NNS."

Splenda also linked to causing gastrointestinal upset, migraine headaches and environmental damage

This is all quite shocking, especially when considering that Splenda's entire existence is predicated on the notion that it is a safe and acceptable sweetening substitute for refined sugar products, which are widely known to spike blood glucose levels and trigger excess insulin production. Many diabetics use Splenda because they have been told that it has a minimal effect on blood sugar levels, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

But it gets worse. Not only has Splenda now been shown to be detrimental for diabetics, but it has also previously been shown to cause a host of other health problems. A 2011 study published in the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology, for instance, identified a link between sucralose consumption and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). And a 2008 study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A found that consumption of Splenda well below the FDA's acceptable daily intake levels disrupted gut flora in test rats.

Beyond this, Splenda has also been linked to causing migraine headaches, and numerous studies have found that the sweetening chemical is persistent in the environment. According to information compiled by GreenMedInfo.com, the discovery of sucralose, Splenda's primary active ingredient, was an accident -- pesticide researchers stumbled upon it after observing that it is closely related to the retired insecticide chemical DDT.

"Industry influence largely accounts for the fact that synthetic chemicals like aspartame, neotame, saccharin and sucralose are being foisted onto the public as 'safe,' non-calorie sweeteners, despite obvious research to the contrary," writes Sayer Ji for GreenMedInfo.com.

Calories in Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a common ingredient in many ready-to-drink protein shakes and sports drinks. However, if you are looking at weight loss as your primary goal, you would find it convenient not to consume the same in high content. Why? Well, let's find out.

Maltodextrin is an ingredient that is prevalent in several ready-to-drink protein shakes and sports drinks that are centered towards aiding you to make your body taut and strong. It is one ingredient widely accepted and ingested for weightlifting and athletic activities. This is so because maltodextrin consists of complex carbohydrates that can be digested quickly, with greater ease. However, if you are not keen on bodybuilding and weightlifting, you may not be interested in consuming the content in large amounts as it has high-glycemic carbohydrates to contribute.

Defining Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a dietary supplement that is added in many ready-to-drink protein shakes that aid bodybuilders, weightlifters and athletes. Maltodextrin is also a common additive to a number of foods. It is classified as a sweet polysaccharide. It does contain some sweetness to deliver to the dish it is added, however, the number of calories that you adopt while you consume sugar in place of maltodextrin are comparatively much lesser. Thus, maltodextrin can be used in a number of recipes to concoct a dish controlled in delivering sweetness.

Nutrition Facts about Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is essentially considered to be a carbohydrate. Maltodextrin as mentioned earlier is easily digestible. With this statement, I make it very clear that maltodextrin is a safe dietary supplement that can be consumed without any health issues cropping up. With ailments and conditions such as diabetes, one is able to manage and control the diabetes levels with greater efficiency. Maltodextrin is a corn-derived oligosaccharide source of carbohydrates. Oligosaccharides contain between 3 and 20 linked sugars, but they qualify as complex carbohydrates.

Maltodextrin is made from rice, corn or potato starch. It is produced by cooking down the starch that is achieved through the addition of potatoes. The natural enzymes and acids work further to breakdown the starch content through the process of hydrolysis of starch. What we receive is a white colored powder. Maltodextrin powder may approximately contain 4 calories per gram, thereby, containing 380 calories per 100 gm, when administered in a drink or added in food. There are negligible amounts of protein and fiber contributing to the supplement.

The Side Effects of Maltodextrin Sucralose

Sucralose and malodextrin are artificial sweeteners often used together as sugar substitutes in processed and prepared foods. Even though it is a natural substance that comes from sugar, sucralose is a processed sweetener. Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate made from corn, potato or rice starch. It's used as a thickener in the processing of food products to increase the volume.

Uses
Sucralose and maltodextrin are used to reduce the number of calories you get in a variety of products, from chewing gum to soda pop and canned fruit. It's a popular and attractive alternative to regular sugar because it provides sweetness in only a fraction of the amount you need to get the same taste from regular sugar. It's inexpensive to process and can help you lose weight.

Safety
In general, sugar substitutes are considered safe, according to the Mayo Clinic. When used in moderate amounts, even pregnant women are safe using products made with sucralose. As a filler, maltodextrin is an all-natural ingredient that is easily digestible and has the same amount of calories as sugar carbohydrates, about four calories per gram.

Blood Sugar
Maltodextrin affects blood sugar in the same way other carbs do, especially when consumed in large amounts. Sucralose on the other hand, does not affect blood sugar levels and is considered a "free food" for diabetics, according to the Mayo Clinic. It's the combination that may cause spikes in insulin because maltodextrin is a carbohydrate with a high glycemic index, similar to table sugar and should be used in moderation if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia. You must consider the carbohydrate content of products sweetened with added maltodextrin to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

False Security
When you eat sweets, regardless of the source of the sweetness, your brain elicits neurotransmitters similar to those secreted when you eat pure sugar. As a result, you may continue to incur cravings and an increased appetite for the substance even though you're consuming calorie-free versions of the food. Additionally, according to Bauman College, you may be lulled into thinking the food you're eating is healthy because of its low sugar content when in actuality, you are consuming large amounts of refined and processed carbohydrates in the maltodextrin fillers, refined flour and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils used in the manufacturing process. Both psychologically and physically, you actually may be sabotaging any weight loss efforts by substituting real sugar with so-called healthy alternatives.

Mysterious Maltodextrin

Woman reading label.Have you ever scrutinized a food label? Ever notice the term maltodextrin? One of my clients with PCOS recently asked me about it and I decided to do a little investigating. I never thought much about maltodextrin but have since noticed it in many food products, including some artificial sweeteners, salad dressings, pudding, etc. Some of these products even claim they don't contain carbohydrates. The question remains...what is maltodextrin and what effect does it have on your body?

What is maltodextrin?
Maltodextrins are made from natural corn, rice or potato starch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes are used to break the starch into smaller polymers. This process is similar to how the body digests carbohydrates. Basically, it is an easily digested form of carbohydrate. It comes in a white powder with a mildly sweet taste and is used in processed foods as a thickener, or a filler since it's fairly inexpensive. It's often used to create additional volume to a food product (such as in confections or some packets of artificial sweeteners) without altering flavor.

Where is it found?
Maltodextrins are found in many different foods, including canned fruits, snacks, confectionery, desserts, nutritional beverages, instant pudding, flavored gelatins, sauces and salad dressings. It is also used in sweetening some teas, coffee, and powdered soft drinks. Maltodextrins may also be an ingredient in the single-serve, table-top packet of some sugar substitutes such as Splenda and Equal. It is also used in pharmaceuticals as a binding agent. So you can see that maltodextrins are a popular ingredient in our food supply. Check some of the food labels on products in your cabinets and refrigerator for the word maltodextrin.

Effects of maltodextrin on blood sugar
Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate and will have an effect on your blood sugar. It contains the same amount of carbohydrate and calories as sugar (4 calories per gram). It's easily digested and is absorbed even more rapidly than glucose. Maltodextrin has a glycemic effect of 106 - 136 (depending upon what chart you read) as compared to table sugar (sucrose) which has a glycemic effect of 65 and glucose which has a glycemic index of 100. So obviously, maltodextrin will affect your blood sugar, and in turn, your insulin levels. However, the degree as to how maltodextrin will affect blood sugar depends upon the quantity of it in the food product. Here's the problem - maltodextrin is included in the total carbohydrate content, so you really can't tell how much maltodextrin is in the product.
So how can products that are supposedly sugar free contain maltodextrin? Take the example of Equal. If you read the label, you will see it contains maltodextrin. Yet, the label says Equal contains less than one gram of carbohydrate. This is because while maltodextrin is added to bulk this product, only very small amounts are used - less than one gram of maltodextrin and glucose are added. So in reality, it shouldn't have much of an effect on your blood sugar because the amount is so small. However, it is possible that if MANY packets are consumed, it could have an effect on blood sugar levels.
Misinformation on maltodextrin
In my research for this article, I came across several websites that said maltodextrin has a minimal impact on blood sugar and was great for diabetics because it was broken down very slowly. Another site said it had shown a "much lower release into the bloodstream than typical sugar." Now you all know the real scoop - maltodextrin has a similar impact on your blood sugar as compared to sugar - it even has a higher glycemic index!

Now things get a little confusing. There is another kind of maltodextrin that is called "resistant" or maltodextrin-soluble fiber. This type of maltodextrin has a much lower glycemic. It was developed by using natural enzymes to transform the linkages between glucose molecules in conventional maltodextrin to a form that is not digested in the upper digestive tract. Since it isn't digested, it contains minimal calories and carbohydrate and has a negligible effect on blood sugar. One product that I found this type of maltodextrin in is Fibersol-2. But for the most part, we should assume that maltodextrin in the majority of products is not starch resistant maltodextrin.

Bottom Line: What does maltodextrin mean for women with PCOS?
Many women with PCOS, especially those women who are insulin resistant, are following lower glycemic index diets. As most of you know, a low glycemic diet is one that contains only moderate amounts of carbohydrates and focuses on carbs that digest more slowly. Slower digesting carbs, such as legumes, most vegetables and many whole grains, will cause a slower rise of blood sugar, which in turn will cause less insulin to be secreted. Compare this to rapidly digested carbs such as sugar and processed or "white" carbs - which cause a more rapid increase of blood sugar, thus triggering the pancreas to produce more insulin. The last thing a women with PCOS wants is an increase in insulin production.
Maltodextrin is a natural product. It is not dangerous and has been approved as safe for consumption. However, it is a carbohydrate with a high glycemic index and can have an impact on your blood sugar and insulin levels. It is important that you are aware of this as maltodextrin is a very common ingredient in food products.
At this point, I wouldn't say that you have to totally avoid products with maltodextrin. Just be aware of the carb content of that product. And very importantly, pay attention to how you feel after consuming these products. Do they make you hungrier? Do you find that you are gaining weight? If so, you may want to avoid or at least limit them.

Being a food additive that is mostly used as a sweetener, the questions as to the chances of there being some xylitol side effects tend to arise. It is widely used as a medicinal supplement as well as being an alternative to sugar especially because of its low calorie nature. When not being used in its original and natural state, you will find it listed as an ingredient for various products such as chewing gum, dental care products, dietary supplements, processed foods just to mention but a few. Majority of the known xylitol side effects can actually be avoided just by ensuring that you don’t consume the products in excess quality. The product is indeed beneficial but only when consumed in minimal quantities. An over consumption of this or basically any other product is likely to result in negative side effects. 
When in use as an oral health product, some xylitol side effects can be witnessed by the various patients using it. This is considering the fact that it is basically an alcohol based product and should there be insufficient digestion of it, what usually occurs is that the alcohol tends to have negative effects on the gastric system. This has been known to lead to diarrhea which is known to be quite a nuisance and instant medical checkup is recommended so as to rectify this situation. In addition, a minimal consumption of xylitol is encouraged so as to reduce the chances of attracting any xylitol side effects. A high consumption of xylitol will only lead to cases of low blood sugar and hypoglycemia.
There are also some xylitol side effects that cause quite a number of laxative effects. As earlier mentioned, diarrhea will be the instant complaint and this might double up with some abdominal gas complications.
